| Of the many nineteenth century settlers who came to New York's Susquehanna Valley, one whose life deserves to be recorded on the shelves of history is the Hon. C. P. Avery. He was highly respected and admired by his peers and the public for his wisdom and generosity. As a preeminent historian and the first elected county judge, he contributed greatly to the preservation of Indian and early pioneer history, and to the development of the area. Charles Avery's endeavors were so great that "No public meeting could have been complete without this presence." In a surprise move he left his home in Owego, New York for Flint Michigan, where he remained for several years before his life took an unusual turn and caused him to return to New York for his final days. Yours Truly, C. P. Avery includes photographs rarely seen in print such as a 1786 Indian lease of Owego, an 1808 pencil sketch of Owego, and the full portrait of the Indian maiden Sa-sa-na Loft and her family. | |
